Save money at the airport

Time spent in the departure lounge can begin to drain the holiday budget before you have even boarded the plane. Below are some tips to save some money for that extra sangria / ouzo / schnapps when you arrive at your destination.

Check for discount codes

Look for discount codes before booking car parking. There are always deals around and it can save you a small fortune. Money saving expert has some great tips on finding affordable parking.

Use water fountains

Take empty bottles through security and refill from water fountains on the other side. This article from Airport Parking and Hotels provides details on free water fountains in UK airports.

Stock up on snacks

While you are unable to take liquids through security you are allowed to take food. Stock up on snacks before you leave home to avoid paying over the top in the departure lounge.

Take advantage of meal deals

Instead of buying food on your flight at inflated prices, pick up a Boots/WHSmith meal deal at the airport and take it on-board.

Let the kids run wild (no, really!!!)

Make use of the free kids play areas at the airport. Your flight will be a happier experience if they have been able to let off steam before you board the plane. Netflights.com has scored 20 airports and found the most family-friendly airports in the UK, Ireland and Channel Islands.

Take entertainment

Some airlines charge for inflight entertainment. Avoid these charges by loading your phone / tablet with free games, cartoons and movies that can be watched offline.

Stockpile magazines and activity books

Buy magazines and activity books from discount stores before going to the airport and pack them in your hand luggage.

Check your duty free allowance

Duty free is only applicable if you are travelling outside the EU. Check the price tags on items before you purchase them. There will be two figures, one for those travelling within the EU, and another for those travelling outside the EU (and eligible for duty free).

Research the cost of alcohol and tobacco products at your destination. Often items are cheaper in local supermarkets. Numbeo.com has put together price rankings of a mid-range bottle of wine by country.

Book currency in advance or use ATMs at your destination

If you change currency at the airport without pre-booking you will receive a worse exchange rate. Book your currency beforehand and collect at the airport. Travelex only requires four hours notice for online orders so you can still get a deal if you have left it to the last minute (or 240 minutes!).

Check what your bank charges to withdraw money abroad. Often this is the cheapest option and there are usually ATMs in the arrivals hall at destination airports.
