We all know that Christmas is a notoriously expensive time of year. From presents, parties, food and drink, the Bank of England estimates that on average families spend an extra £800 during December. With kids off school for at least two weeks keeping them entertained can add to that expense. We have highlighted some of our favourite activities to get the family out of the house over the Christmas holidays which will not break the bank.
1. Winter Walk or bike ride
A winter walk or bike ride is the perfect way to expend energy when the children are bouncing off the walls having ingested their weight in chocolate. Head to your local woods or trails and collect pine cones, firs and holly which can later be used to make decorations. If you want to find new walking routes then we recommend using Komoot.

2. Visit your local National Trust
The National Trust hosts frequent festive events and activities over the Christmas period. Many of their properties have spectacular Christmas light displays and winter illuminations. Check out their website to see what is on near you.

3. Ping Pong Parlour
Ping Pong Parlours are springing up in shopping centres across the country. Making use of empty retail space they provide free fun and a great way to burn off some of the mince pies.
4. Go to a panto performed by your local drama group
Pantomime’s have become increasingly pricey in recent years. An affordable alternative is to see what your local amateur dramatic society is putting on over the festive period. The performances are high quality, you are supporting a local community group, and saving money in the process.

5. Go on a festive lights tour
So many people take pride in decorating their homes with lights and decorations. You never have to travel far to see a good display. If you are based in Surrey or Hampshire then SurreyLive has a comprehensive list of the best streets to visit. Alternatively have a look at your local community website or Facebook group to see what’s on near you.

6. Visit a museum
Many museums are free to enter and provide an excellent day out when the weather is cold or wet. Redspottedhanky.com has detailed the best free museums in the UK. Our personal favourites are the Natural History Museum, Science Museum and recently discovered Wellcome Collection.
7. Visit a Christmas Market
The UK hosts some fabulous Christmas Markets which are free to wander around. The smell of mulled wine and pine trees will be certain to put you in the festive spirit. Visit England details the best 15 Christmas Markets for 2019. Our favourites are Winchester Christmas Market, set within the grounds of the cathedral and Bath Christmas Market.

8. Visit your local garden centre
Garden centres often have lovely Christmas displays and an array of decorations. Our kids love spending an hour wandering the aisles. Many centres also have a Santa’s Grotto or host breakfast or tea with Santa. Check prices though as this can quickly add to the cost of your visit.

9. Attend a Christmas church service
Whether or not you are religious or regularly attend church there are some lovely festive services and events during December, such as Christingle, nativity services and carol singing. These are all family friendly, bring the community together, and are a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. See your local church website to see what’s on in your area.

10. Sledging (if there is snow!)
Ever hopeful of a white Christmas, if you are lucky enough to get snow then grab your sledge and head to the nearest hill. Take the Family highlights the best hills in the UK. If there are no hills then enjoy building a snowman or having a snowball fight.
